Officiating After Katrina
In the wake of Hurricane Katrina, 46 of Louisiana’s 301 football-playing high schools did not play or only managed a partial schedule. Through the first six weeks of the season, 275 games were cancelled. Thousands of student-athletes are still scattered around the nation, as are the referees: Only 20 of the nearly 140 members of the Crescent City Officials Association are accounted for. The New Orleans Officials Association lost scores more. And nobody knows how many will be back.
Fox Tales
February through April were the cruelest months for officials — at least for officials reading the flurry of ref- and ump-bashing columns on the Fox Sports website. The columns took aim at almost every recent officiating controversy in pro and college games, offering what was passed off as critical insight, but looked a lot more like blustery ill-informed opinion.
Go Ahead, Take the Bribe
In the past two years, accusations and convictions involving soccer referees accepting bribes have made headlines in Germany, Brazil, Italy, Poland, China, the Czech Republic, South Africa and Vietnam. It poses the question: Could the same thing happen to major sports in the U.S.?
