We at Referee magazine and the National Association of Sports Officials are much saddened by the passing of Frank DeFord. Frank received accolades, honors and formal recognitions over the years for his work at Sports Illustrated, on television and myriad other projects. He deserved every one of them.

“Frank DeFord was extraordinary in his support of sports officials,” said Barry Mano, publisher of Referee Magazine and President of NASO. “He before most or even any, understood and cared about what officiating means to sports and culture. He called often to gain an insight and then the following day would share his incisive and intellectual perspective with listeners, be they at the radio or the television. If you are a sports official, Frank deserves your reflection and remembrance. He will be missed.”

Frank honored Referee Magazine during its 40th Anniversary Celebration at the 2016 Sports Officiating Summit by recording a special video in which he shared, from his perspective, how impactful Referee has been as a force for not only sports officiating, but sports journalism.
