Death of a Union (Referee 5/00) — Rumors were spreading of an umpires’ strike during the All-Star break, but longtime union leader Richie Phillips had a plan up his sleeve. Mass resignations would give the umpires leverage and no strike would be needed! In the end, 22 umpires jobs were lost. The strategy failed and so a new day dawned with the "death" of the umpires’ old union and the beginning of the World Umpires Association. Take an inside look at how it all happened.
