Death of a Union (Referee 5/00) Rumors were spreading of an umpires strike during the All-Star break, but longtime union leader Richie Phillips had a plan up his sleeve. Mass resignations would give the umpires leverage and no strike would be needed! In the end, 22 umpires jobs were lost.
