The Art of Being an Official (Referee 7-8/77) — One of Referee’s first and most enduring features, “The Art of Being an Official” has been reprinted twice in Referee since its original publication, once in 1980 and again in 1996. This short feature, like “The Gray Area,” describes the human element of officiating. In essence, it is a treatise on the intangibles of officiating, covering the things you won’t find in your rulebooks and mechanics manuals. Our commitment to writing about those intangibles has long been a Referee hallmark.
