Heads or Tails? (Referee 5/99) It was the most talked about controversy of the 1998 NFL season: Phil Lucketts infamous coin toss. Vilified in the press and around watercoolers nationwide for screwing up something so simple as the flip of a coin, Luckett was redeemed when Referee ran this exhaustively researched feature, which revealed, among other things, that Lucketts actions were textbook correct according to NFL procedures at the time. Unfortunately, Luckett was not afforded public support from the league and became everybodys favorite sling-and-arrow target. Ultimately the NFL changed its procedures for administering coin tosses. And although at least one national sportswriter publicly apologized to Luckett in the wake of this article, the NFL has since remained mum. |
