Say Good Knight (Referee 11/99) — This article told NCAA Division I men’s basketball referee Ted Valentine’s side of the story of a famous run-in the referee had with former Indiana University Coach Bob Knight, a run-in that was more than a year in the past by the time Valentine acquiesced to speak about it. The story was dramatic due to the national spotlight of the big-time men’s basketball game and Knight’s high profile — Valentine slapped the coach with three technical fouls. But the interesting theme for our readers involved the interplay between the three officiating partners on the floor and in the locker room, where a brief scuffle broke out between Valentine and referee Ed Hightower. We were deluged with letters, e-mails and media requests as soon as the story was published, but the legacy of the article came a few weeks later when Referee learned the Big 10 punished Valentine by reducing his conference schedule for violating a conference gag rule in speaking to us about the incident.
