The Gray Area (Referee 11/95) — Not only was “The Gray Area” one of our best received features, it also reflected one of the most basic components that has made Referee so viable over the last 25 years. The definition of the gray area is that space between the literal definition of the rules and an individual official’s selective enforcement. It is judgment as determined by spirit and intent. It is also one of the concepts that has made Referee a success. From the start, we determined to give a practical view of officiating, one that allowed for individual interpretation. Articles discussing philosophies of enforcement, such as that feature and our long-running “Doing It” columns, are cornerstones of this magazine.
