Success is easy to define, right? An outcome — usually a favorable one. It’s getting what you want. Of course, that definition leaves a lot of room for interpretation. Is getting what you want out of officiating working the perfect game? Is it getting to the big leagues? Whatever your desires are, when it comes to attaining them, you must focus on three essentials: Character, education and accountability.
__At the June 22-25, 2000, NASO convention in Colorado Springs, Colo., the notion of “Successful Officiating” was discussed by a panel that included NCAA Division I men’s basketball referee John Clougherty, Ohio High School Athletic Association Assistant Commissioner and Big 10 football official Hank Zaborniak and Big 10 and NCAA National Coordinator of Football Officials Dave Parry.
