While attention to character, education and accountability
are the building blocks to a successful officiating career, there are
many other factors that spin off from those essentials. 1. Know the Rules It all starts with the guidelines
for how to play the game. If you dont know them inside and out,
youre starting 10 steps back. Get educated or youll be held
accountable. 2. Show No Bias Wipe away everything youve
ever felt as a player or fan. It takes strength of character to not care
who wins or loses. 3. Become a Communicator The best officials
are able to get their point across effectively both verbally and nonverbally.
If youre not a natural communicator, educate yourself. Take a public
speaking course or attend a clinic. 4. Look Good Appearances are everything. Hold
yourself personally accountable every game for making sure your uniform
is cleaned and pressed, and that youre groomed impeccably. 5. Stay in Shape Officiating is an athletic
activity. Youll never find any level of success if you cant
physically keep up with play. 6. Listen Become a sponge when youre around officials who have reached a level of success that youre striving for. How did they get there? Keep your ears open and youll likely find out. |
