While attention to character, education and accountability are the building blocks to a successful officiating career, there are many other factors that spin off from those essentials.

1. Know the Rules — It all starts with the guidelines for how to play the game. If you don’t know them inside and out, you’re starting 10 steps back. Get educated or you’ll be held accountable.

2. Show No Bias — Wipe away everything you’ve ever felt as a player or fan. It takes strength of character to not care who wins or loses.

3. Become a Communicator — The best officials are able to get their point across effectively both verbally and nonverbally. If you’re not a natural communicator, educate yourself. Take a public speaking course or attend a clinic.

4. Look Good — Appearances are everything. Hold yourself personally accountable every game for making sure your uniform is cleaned and pressed, and that you’re groomed impeccably.

5. Stay in Shape — Officiating is an athletic activity. You’ll never find any level of success if you can’t physically keep up with play.

6. Listen — Become a sponge when you’re around officials who have reached a level of success that you’re striving for. How did they get there? Keep your ears open and you’ll likely find out.
