In celebration of 50 years of publishing, Referee magazine launched Magazine Madness, presented by RefReps, a bracket-style tournament to determine the most iconic cover in its history. Since 1976, the magazine has featured a vast array of officials across numerous sports, including basketball, football, volleyball, softball, soccer, and baseball, as well as rare appearances by hockey, boxing, and, unbelievably, a cow.

The Contest Breakdown

To organize the challenge, the Referee staff selected and seeded 64 of its best covers divided into four distinct regions:

  • Early Years Region: Features covers from the first few years of the magazine that have withstood the test of time.
  • Mid-Century ‘Modern’ Region: Highlights iconic covers from the late 1980s and early 1990s.
  • Turn of the Century Region: Reflects the changing landscape of officiating from the late 1990s to the early 2000s.
  • Modern Era Region: Showcases the style and unforgettable moments of the last 15-plus years.

Voting for the contest officially opened on March 19, 2026, giving readers the final voice in picking the best cover through multiple rounds of elimination.

The Champion: February 2024

The winner of the Magazine Madness challenge is the February 2024 cover, representing the Modern Era Region.

Why it Won

The February 2024 cover features a high-energy “straight-on” action shot of High school basketball referee Kristi Boylan delivering a clear and emphatic signal. This specific image was noted by the design team for its strong visual communication; as the tournament descriptions highlighted, a “strong signal” often gives a cover an advantage in the selection process. With the bold headline “GOT IT!” the cover captures a definitive officiating moment that resonated with voters as a standout image from the magazine’s first half-century. The photo was taken by photographer Bill Straus.
